Shetland Coastguard accept old and damaged pyrotechnics for disposal, which are
stored securely to await destruction. When excessive numbers of flares are stored
a request is passed to the Joint Services E.O.D. Operations Centre and a team
from the Northern
Diving Group of 3-4 men are tasked to perform the disposal on their next
visit to the Islands if not immediately. The teams are also on 24 hr call to
respond immediately to a request for the disposal of mines or other ordnance
either found on the shore line or snagged in fishing vessel nets.
